The Grand Appeal is the official Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, committed to helping saving lives and supporting families.
We love being based in Bristol. Nothing could be more Bristol in our eyes than Wallace and Gromit, from the creative brain of Bristol’s very own Nick Park and the team at Aardman Animation. The Grand Appeal has had a long term partnership, which kicked off some years ago with a sculpture trail across Bristol of giant, uniquely decorated Gromit dogs.
The Challenge
The team requested our assistance in creating an interactive campaign and maximising revenue generation. Our goal was to make the trail across Bristol as engaging and rewarding as possible for people of all ages.
The Solution
The digital approach revolved around the Detect-O-Gromit App, which was monetised through an integrated website and e-commerce shop. Everything was designed, built, and supported by Element78’s team. The app utilised geo-fencing to motivate people to walk and discover the numerous Gromits. Users could collect a Gromit by standing close to it and adding it to their collection.

The Result
This app was THE most downloaded app in the UK for a significant period of time and played a pivotal role in the success of the campaign. The outcome was incredibly successful, prompting us to expand the website’s capabilities to include timed baskets and exclusive member deals. We designed the solution to be flexibility, adding more features as the campaign gained rapid momentum.
